sam-philip-teddy_fillCongratulations to brother-sister team, senior Philip and sophomore Samantha O’Sullivan. Sam and Philip won first place in the White House Historical Association, White House At Bat Challenge. Their submission will be developed into a video that will be shown at Nationals Park! See the press release here.

Inspired by a love of history, conservation, and baseball, they  focussed their submission on President Theodore Roosevelt’s work to create national parks as safe sites for historic artifacts and diverse, precious wildlife. Their video will debut at the game at Nationals Park Stadium on Friday, May 27.

Sam (left), Philip (right), and their teacher-sponsor Mr. Ishmael (not shown—that’s Teddy) were also honored at a White House Historical Association reception at Decatur House on May 5.

These students exemplify what access and opportunity and public-private partnerships can achieve for students residing in all wards of the District of Columbia.

Congratulations, graduates!

From Assistant Principal Simone Anderson:

We are honored to announce that the winner of the 2016 Future Global Leaders Scholarship Award is our very own Asha Pappajohn. Asha is a senior at SWWHS. Through Wall’s Global Issues Network club, Asha found her calling for international affairs. She has since become the outreach director for the club, encouraging other students to become globally minded, become deputy head delegate of her school’s Model U.N. (MUN) team, and taken her vision abroad by volunteering in Paraguay. For her project, Asha created FrancisMUN, an MUN club for junior high school students at Francis Stevens Educational Campus. She won a $10,000 scholarship. She plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall of 2016.

June 1: Walls freshman Eliyah Lister won second place — and a $2,000 college scholarship — in the B’nai B’rith Diverse Minds writing and art contest. Applicants were asked to write and illustrate a children’s book that tells a story of tolerance, diversity or inclusion. Eliyah’s book, Hadia’s Lunch, tells the story of a girl from Turkey who gets picked on in school because the food her mother makes her for lunch is different from regular American food. But with the help of friends, Hadia is able to show the others that being different can be good. Congratulations, Eliyah!

Debate

Congratulations to the Walls debate team for an amazing showing! Earlier in March three teams from SWW debated at the metrofinals, which invites only the best teams from the region to vie for a spot in the National tournament in May. One of our varsity teams (Noa Rosinplotz and Mahler Revsine) came in second which means they’ll be heading to Sacramento in May. Also debating were Atalanta Ritter and Jack Watkins, Penelope Leibovich and Anthony Thomas.

“The School Without Walls Cheerleading team is a sisterhood that brings spirit to the community. They cheer at the school’s pep rally and assemblies, and they support many teams by cheering them on at events. In addition to bringing spirit to the school community, they also compete against other schools in Cheerleading competitions. This sisterhood is made up of females from all grades (9-12) who get to meet people that they many not have otherwise had a chance to meet, and bond over many things in and outside of cheerleading. ”

Special thanks to Captain MacKenzie Tate for introducing us to the team!

WAYU_Fall_Fling_20191006_115825_KYL_0329-(ZF-1330-40038-1-001) (1)The Flightless Birds Squad took to the fields earlier this month, competing the in the Fairfax Fall Fling. Our growing team split into two teams and competed against some of the top high school teams in the nation, including Yorktown, HB-Woodlawn, and Wilson. Splitting into two teams with very few players made it tough to close out games, but we are still proud of our 11th place result, out of 14 teams. Senior captains Leah Silverman, Luca Christiansen and Robert Mcfarlane led the team exceptionally, integrating experienced vets and our record-setting freshman class. It was a long weekend of 8 games over two days, but the Birds swam fast and hard!

The ultimate team has worked hard all fall to prepare for the main season in the spring and this early challenge will help them prepare for the big show: DC States in May. They are still looking for new recruits and interested players should talk to the captains or Coach Webster.

A special shoutout to seniors Leah Silverman, Ashley Cheung and Isabel Mejia-Roberts who also played on a girls all-star team on Sunday. Their team went undefeated and won the entire tournament!
